Governments Commitment for Offshore Wind Encouraging says Wind Industry

FOWIND aims to unlock the offshore potential of India by introducing various capacity building measures for  stakeholders who could contribute to the development of the offshore wind market in the long run. In line with this objective FOWIND conducted series of workshops titled “Towards Offshore development in India” aimed to introduce different aspects of offshore wind power development that are necessary to establish cost competitiveness in the offshore wind market. In Chennai the event was held on 11 September 2014. The event saw representation from Central and State Government agencies, Private sector, developmental agencies thus providing a platform for key stakeholders to discuss the prospects of developing this industry which is at its nascent stage in India. Dr. Alok Shrivastava, Joint-Secretary, MNRE chaired the Inaugural session and presented an overview of India’s offshore wind policy and the way forward. Ms. Smita Singh, Programme Manager, EU Delegation to India presented EU’s perspective on offshore wind in India. Mr. Arjan Mast, Program Manager, TKI Offshore Wind, The Netherlands shared the Dutch experience of handling offshore wind sector development. Mr. Paul Reynolds, Head, Strategy and Policy – Offshore Wind, DNV GL Energy, UK presented on the issues and lessons learned from EU strategy for offshore wind.  Ms. Meera Sudhakar, Senior Research Scientist CSTEP drew our attention to the potential role of offshore wind in India’s overall RE portfolio, existing baseline scenario in Tamil Nadu and various aspects that will hinder the feasibility of offshore projects in the state of Tamil Nadu. An Open House Discussion on “Key Challenges/barriers for offshore wind development” was organized during the event. The session was chaired by Mr. Subramanian, Ex. Secretary MNRE. The highlights from the discussion focused on vital functions like preparations needed before the development phase, logistics and supply chain capabilities in Indian companies, possible financing strategies for future projects.
